Brought to you by the Businesses of UpTown Waterloo

A Message from the Director

Patti Brooks, Executive Director

I am very proud to be the Executive Director of the UpTown Waterloo Business Improvement Area, a business community with over 460 businesses – approximately 75% of which are independent businesses, and many of whom have been in UpTown Waterloo for years. That represents over 6,000 employees in the BIA boundary.

The prime mandate of the UpTown Waterloo Business Improvement Area (BIA) is to promote and beautify the core area of Waterloo. We are committed to representing our membership by providing support through marketing initiatives, strategic planning, communication, staff and Board of Director interaction and a solid partnership with our municipality. We do all of this in an effort to keep UpTown Waterloo, the heart of our City, a safe, healthy and vibrant core.

The UpTown Waterloo BIA has a volunteer Board of Directors representing our membership. The Board is elected every four years in conjunction with the Municipal Election and according to the Provincial Municipal Act. The Board is nominated, voted on by the members of our BIA and approved by Waterloo City Council. We are one of over 240 BIAs in Ontario who are members of the Ontario Business Improvement Area Association (OBIAA), an organization that supports BIAs across the Province.

Waterloo Region has engaged in one of the largest projects it has ever seen: Light Rail Transit (LRT), “ION.”  This is an incredible opportunity, a “game changer” – not only for Waterloo Region but for UpTown Waterloo. It is not without challenge for our businesses but our Board of Directors, committees and staff are here to support in every way possible. We are sharing best practices learned by other municipalities that have gone through similar projects, and are working closely with The Region of Waterloo, GrandLinq and the City of Waterloo to communicate with our residents, guests and businesses that “UpTown Waterloo is OPEN for Business” during  the construction of ION. We encourage our residents and guests to continue to support the businesses in UpTown Waterloo during this time.

We boast some of the largest service providers, financial institutions and have a great mix of retail shopping, entertainment and world class dining. Our festivals and events bring thousands of people to UpTown Waterloo each year. The vast number of people living in UpTown Waterloo not only makes our core healthy and vibrant, but exemplifies our Live, Work, Learn, Play, Shop philosophy. We invite you to browse our website and explore all that UpTown Waterloo has to offer. We appreciate your business!
