Last Week of #KWFeelGoodFridays – Final Features Announced

by | May 1, 2020 | News Releases

Today, the final set of features for the #KWFeelGoodFridays initiative were announced. Last month, the Uptown Waterloo Business Improvement Area (BIA) and Downtown Kitchener BIA launched the “Feel Good Friday” social media campaign in an effort to recognize individuals who are “doing good” for others during the COVID-19 pandemic and showcase our community’s incredibly caring spirit.

Nominated by City of Waterloo Councillor Jen Vasic, Amanda Thompson and the moderator team of the Caremongering-KW Facebook group are our first feature. In response to the pandemic, the group was formed to provide mutual support and solidarity through encouraging words, providing information, offering help with practical tasks for those who need it and more. Amanda and the other moderators created the caring group out of a compassion for their community and neighbours. They have selflessly given of their time to monitor posts and help share information. The group has grown to nearly 8,500 members since its creation. What an amazing example of a community coming together!

This week’s second feature is Kierra Young, who hosted an online jewellery-making workshop with proceeds going to the Food Bank of Waterloo Region. Nominated by her partner, Chase, Kierra combined her creativity and desire to cultivate connections during this time of isolation with an act of kindness in giving back to her community. Way to go, Kierra!

With many fantastic #KWFeelGoodFridays submissions coming in each week, it was tough for our judges to choose the top stories. As such, over the next few weeks we will post some honourable mentions.

Thanks to everyone who nominated generous people in our community making a real difference during these challenging times. Next week we will be hosting a draw for #KWFeelGoodFridays nominators with the chance to win $100 Uptown dollars and $100 Downtown dollars.

Over the last four weeks, the #KWFeelGoodFridays stories have really inspired our BIA teams. So much so, that we want to continue the “feel good” vibes! Although the contest is now over, the BIAs will continue to encourage community members to share stories of people and groups “doing good” in K-W with the #KWFeelGoodFridays hashtag.
